Bike & Car Share Schemes

Providing a wide range of modern transport options can improve the quality of life for residents as well as the visitor experience. The success of Barclay's Cycle Hire scheme in London has inspired more cities and towns to offer a street-based rental station network that allows you to hire and return a bicycle where you need it, when you need it. Most schemes require a one off pre-registration to join the ‘club’ and hire times range from half an hour to weeks.

Following on the heels of Paris' Autolib electric car rental service, more car hire and car pool schemes are popping up. These 'car clubs' all have the benefit of providing affordable environmentally friendly transport without requiring individual ownership and storage of the vehicle, which in turn reduces costs, pollution and congestion.

There are a number of companies offering systems including set up and management. If you feel a scheme like this might work in your town or city try out some in other places as a mystery shopper, and then contact the providers whose service impress you. Costs are related to scale and the income after costs and ongoing investment will reflect on the number of partners involved and the take up of the scheme. Online examples are here, here and here.
