The old adage about first impressions lasting is just as important for towns as it is for job applicants. A First Impressions Exercise has been developed by the Association of Town & City Management (ATCM) as a tool for gaining a clear understanding of a town centre’s strengths and weaknesses, as seen through fresh eyes. ATCM match participating towns and providing templates for evaluation each other, and the results are then swapped.
By asking someone removed from the day-to-day life of your town centre to evaluate it gives you invaluable, honest feedback as to what potential visitors may take away as their first impression. If you would like to take a fresh look at your town and learn how you could improve perceptions, this exercise could be a cost-effective way of doing so. It also presents the opportunity for developing relationships with other towns and making new professional contacts.
