Managing the Transition Between Day & Night
The shift between day and night-time activities can bring a number of management challenges and opportunities for town centres. As the traditional business day ends and a workers simultaneously make the journey home, pressure on transport infrastructure can cause congestion, pollution and frayed nerves. With careful planning, the transition from day to evening can be a profitable period for the high street. Fostering and promoting a range of activities with the help of the leisure and hospitality sectors can encourage increased activity on the high street during a period when it could otherwise be quiet. Retailers with later closing times as well as cultural and social events help to entice town centre workers to stay in the centre a little longer, cutting congestion at peak times, and increasing custom for the retail and service sectors. Cheaper or free parking between 5pm and 8pm has also proven effective to develop the ‘shoulder’ period.
