Using Vacant Spaces : a successful case study

Camden Collective, Camden Town Unlimited

Location: Camden

Camden Town Unlimited developed the Camden Collective project, a self-sustaining business network for like-minded peers to share ideas and learn from others. The Collective offers space, work experience and local community workshops. By clustering creative industries in one space, the Collective attracts and retains investment in the Camden area, increases the speed at which the businesses develop and retains top creative talent in the area.

Once a business has outgrown the Collective, they are helped to move into larger local offices retaining economic and employment benefits. The Collective already has 45 businesses using the spaces and has created 26 business start-ups and 10 full-time equivalent jobs. It is funded by the Mayor of London's Regeneration Fund, Camden Council and Camden Town Unlimited.

The strategy for Camden Collective was to ensure creative talent is not lost from the area, and also to continue Camden's cultural heritage and current reputation as being at the heart of the UK's creative community.
