Enhancing your Town Centre : a successful case study

Colmore Business District, Church Street Square

Location: Colmore Business District, Birmingham

The project, delivered by the CBD business improvement district in Birmingham city centre, focused on increasing the footway width and reducing the carriageway to create a more prominent pedestrian space in the heart of the business district. Church Street forms part of the 'two churches' walking route between the Jewellery Quarter and the city centre, and the final project was a great example of how spaces can be designed to link cultural sites and also become a cultural place in their own right; the final design allows for small-scale music and photographic events (including the annual Colmore Jazz Festival) as well as being a space of quiet contemplation during the day for busy office workers.

The scheme was funded through a mix of private and public sources, with Colmore Business District using their BID levy to leverage public sector funding with the support of their members.
