Building Resilient, Balanced Town Centres : a successful case study

Great Harwood Farmers' Market

Location: Great Harwood

The local authority successfully reintegrated a farmers' market onto their market square, much to the delight of traders and the local community. The new home of the market is Townsgate, a previously underused, low footfall area in January 2013 that became the hub of the town by March.

The achievement was made possible by strong social media marketing (facebook, twitter) and thanks to the local authority making the application and delivery process virtually paper-free. The local authority did purchase wood chalets to be used during the market and removed when the event is not on to give the event a distinct character, and other services have been invited to show-off during market day and bring a wider community feel (eg, local owl sanctuary, youth groups)
